Assistance Promised for Summerside Seafood Supreme Workers

* Development and Technology [to Apr 2008]
Human Resources Development Canada and the Department of Development and Technology, through the Canada/Prince Edward Island Labour Market Development Agreement, have pledged support for workers laid off because of the closure of Summerside Seafood Supreme.

Seventy-five to a hundred people are without employment because of the closure. Names of those people requiring employment assistance were collected this morning. Over the next few days, every attempt will be made to place them in jobs. If monetary assistance is required, funds could be accessed through the LMDA.

Positions for the workers will be sought within the seafood processing industry as well as with other employers. Consideration will be made for each individual's circumstances; for example, people without transportation will not be offered positions which require a car.

More details, including the potential cost of any support, will become clearer as each employee finds work.
