Applying For Student Loans Via The Internet

* Education [to Apr 2008]
Applying for student loans has become easier in Prince Edward Island thanks to an on-line application process.

By completing an electronic application form, students requiring financial assistance will benefit from increased access and convenience. Applicants will be able to check the status of their loan 24 hours a day, view all calculations related to their loan request on-line and submit new or additional information should they wish to appeal the loan decision or amount.

"We believe this on-line application process will benefit students in many ways," says Dave MacPherson, Manager, Student Loan Program, Department of Education. "Not only will this system lessen delays and offer increased accessibility, but it will eventually allow for faster response to student requests for financial assistance."

All information submitted on-line for student loans will be confidential and secure.

The province of Prince Edward Island received 3253 requests for student financial assistance in the 1996-97 academic year. MacPherson says he hopes that many of this year's applicants will take advantage of applying by Internet.

"As a department, we are continuously looking for ways to improve the delivery of our programs and services through the use of technology," explains MacPherson. "We believe the Internet is an essential resource, problem-solving and communications tool for education."

On-line student loan applications can be accessed through the Department of Education homepage at http://www.gov.pe.ca/educ/index.html.
