Another Aerospace Company Set to Establish Operations in PEI

The latest addition to the PEI aerospace industry, Tronos Canada Inc., is operating out of the south side of Hangar 8 in Slemon Park. The parent company of a London-based aircraft leasing company, Tronos owns and/or manages a number of BAe146 aircraft. The company is establishing a maintenance, repair and overhaul operation (MRO) facility with spare parts administration and aircraft leasing administration in PEI to service the North American market.

The cost of airframe repair and overhaul is escalating sharply in Europe. The company has decided it would be more cost efficient to do its own MRO and has chosen to locate the facility in Slemon Park.

Tronos aspires over the next few months to employ approximately 20 individuals and will offer many additional subcontract opportunities to aerospace firms already established in PEI.

“This sector has grown to become a key player in our province with more than 700 employees and $180 million in sales each year,” said Minister of Development and Technology Michael F. Currie. “PEI has been seeking a fixed wing, airframe deep maintenance company since the inception of Slemon Park. This is a key business and we are very pleased to welcome Tronos to PEI.”

“It makes good sense for Tronos to locate at Slemon Park in Prince Edward Island,” said Mike Everett, Tronos Canada President. “Working out of Slemon Park, Tronos will reap the benefits of a first class infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce, and easier access to the North American market. We are pleased at the calibre of people we have been able to attract here.”

The company has begun operation in the facility and upon Transport Canada Certification expects to add additional employees. Training for senior employees on the BAe146 has begun.

The Provincial Government is providing a $400,000 forgivable performance incentive through PEI Business Development Inc., one of the lead business development agencies for the province.
