Angling Season Opens

Spring is here and with it the opening of angling season on Saturday, April 15. Angling licenses are now available.

All anglers 16 years of age and older must be in possession of an angling license. Licensed anglers are also required to be in possession of a Wildlife Conservation Fund permit. Both the licenses and the permits are available from Access PEI locations and Regional Services Centres as well as license vendors located throughout the province.

The Department of Technology and Environment has distributed the 2000 Angling Summary to all locations. This bilingual publication has been refreshed with added graphics and maps to provide more educational information to anglers. This information is also available on the Government of Prince Edward Island Web site at www.gov.pe.ca/te/faw-info.

Should anglers require clarification on regulations or practices, they are encouraged to contact the Fish and Wildlife Division or a provincial conservation officer.

Within a month of the opening of the season, the Fish and Wildlife Division, in partnership with community angling and conservation groups, is organizing "Take Your Family Fishing" on Mother's Day Weekend, May 13 and 14, 2000. No fishing license will be required for this event. It will be a province-wide celebration of the outdoor adventures of recreational fishing with no strings attached, just fishing line.

"Fishing is about solitude and enjoying nature - a chance to get away from the everyday hectic pace," said Art Smith, Director, Fish and Wildlife Division. "Families of all ages are invited to retreat to a pond or stream to learn more about fishing, a long-standing tradition in Prince Edward Island."

Watch for posters with more details regarding locations, activities and times of "Take Your Family Fishing" in May.
