The Department of Transportation and Public Works today announced that amendments to the Off- Highway Vehicle Act designed to improve safety for ATV and dirt bike operators have come into effect this week.

During the Fall Session of the Legislature An Act To Amend the Off-Highway Vehicle Act was passed which strengthens safety provisions around the use of off- highway vehicles such as ATV’s and dirt bikes, particularly for Island youth. Among the changes coming into effect are:

• Restricting the use of an ATV by youth less than fourteen years of age;

• Requiring operators of ATV’s and dirt bikes to wear protective clothing and equipment;

• Restricting the operation of an off-highway vehicle by a person under the age of eighteen unless they have completed an approved safety course or have held a valid driver’s license for two years;

• Restricting operation of an off-highway vehicle that has an engine size in excess of that recommended by the manufacturer for the age and weight of the operator.

“Use of ATV’s can be an enjoyable experience but it must also be a safe one,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. “These changes will help strengthen safety rules around ATV use, especially for Island youth and families.”
