Prince Edward Island's second largest food processing operation is expanding its operations. Amalgamated Dairies Limited (ADL), Summerside, is modernizing its cheese processing, cutting, packing and packaging operations.
"The importance of businesses keeping pace with new market demands and changing consumer trends can't be stressed enough," said Joe McGuire, M.P., Egmont, on behalf of Lawrence MacAulay, Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Veterans. "ADL has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and determination in moving ahead with upgrading their cheese packaging line."
"Amalgamated Dairies Limited was recently named the top Island company in Atlantic Canada by Atlantic Progress magazine," said Robert Morrissey, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "This expansion of the cheese product line is sure to further increase the profile and competitiveness of ADL in domestic markets."
The company is planning to increase the size of their packaging from 19 kilogram blocks to 290 kilogram blocks, in response to market demands.
"This project will allow the current cheese cutting and packaging line to adapt to the handling of the new larger blocks," said Bruce Wood, Chairman of Amalgamated Dairies. "It will also allow us to market our product packaging and ensure a better return for our product in the marketplace. The move to value-added packaging and processing on PEI will help provide jobs to the local provincial economy."
