Alpine ski hill at Brookvale to open Saturday

The Alpine ski hill at Brookvale Winter Activity Park will open Saturday, January 7, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.

“Brookvale is home to Prince Edward Island’s only alpine ski hill and is an integral part of our provincial park system. Many Islanders look forward to the opening of the winter activity park each year,” he said.

It is expected two runs, the front lawn and the training hill, will be open this weekend. The park will offer reduced rates of $10 lift passes and $12 rentals for adults, students and seniors. The rental rate for children under the age of five will be $5. Lessons in skiing and snowboarding also start Saturday, January 7.

“Islanders will enjoy improved services this winter, including a new carpet lift that has replaced the handle tow on the training run,” said the minister.

A carpet lift is a belt placed along an alpine run that moves skiers up the hill until they reach the top and slide into the snow. Carpet lifts are easier to use and can accommodate a larger number of riders than the handle tow lift. The new lift also improves access for skiers with disabilities.

The Nordic site will open as soon as weather conditions permit.
