New provincial government funding will upgrade fire equipment and renovate community facilities that serve the Alberton-Montrose area, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair.

“Upgraded equipment for the Alberton Fire Department and renovations to the Montrose Hall and Western Community Curling Club will provide better fire protection and upgraded meeting and recreational facilities for those communities,” said Minister LeClair.

The total cost of the three projects is $116,000. The provincial government, led by the Island Community Fund, is contributing approximately $69,000, with the community sponsors providing $47,000 overall.

The Montrose Community Club needs renovations to address some moisture issues and enhance accessibility. The total cost of the project is $26,000. The Island Community Fund is contributing $19,500 to this project.

The Town of Alberton Fire Department needs to upgrade some firefighting equipment as well as purchase new vehicle extraction equipment. The total cost of the project is $70,000. The Island Community Fund is contributing $35,000 to this project.

The Western Community Curling Club is in need of renovations to some of its kitchen area and ice surface walkways. The total cost of this project is $20,000. The Island Community Fund and the Facility Improvement Grant are contributing $14,000 to this project.

“Properly equipped fire departments and modern community centres are important components for building strong rural communities,” said Mr. LeClair.

The Island Community Fund is a six-year $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities.
