The Prince Edward Island Agriculture Awareness Committee has presented two awards in recognition of contributions to increasing awareness of the agriculture industry in the province. A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Dr. Robert Curtis of Charlottetown for years of continuous and dedicated service to the industry. The annual Teacher Recognition Award was presented to the principal and teachers of Morell Consolidated School for their efforts in incorporating agriculture into classroom activities over and above normal curriculum standards.
“Many individuals and organizations have made a significant contribution to increasing awareness of the issues facing this province’s largest industry,” said Marg Weeks, chair of the Agriculture Awareness Committee. “These awards recognize exceptional efforts on the part of Dr. Curtis and the Morell Consolidated School to create a greater understanding and appreciation of the importance of agriculture to all Islanders.”
Dr. Curtis is a respected teacher, mentor and veterinarian with a career spanning more than 50 years. He was the founding chair of the Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College and has received a number of awards for teaching excellence. He recently received the second annual Lieutenant Governor’s Award in Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine. He was a member of the Agriculture Awareness Committee since its inception in 1992.
On alternate years since 2002, the Morell Consolidated School has hosted an agricultural fall fair. This event involves students and teachers from the school, the early childhood development centre and kindergarten, as well as students from surrounding schools in activities such as farm animal displays, farm safety, a mini-tractor rodeo and exhibits. The day is made possible because of the leadership and support of school principal Leo Hendricken, teachers and staff.
The Agriculture Awareness Committee includes representatives of farm organizations, commodity groups, agribusinesses and federal and provincial departments of agriculture.
