Agricultural Awareness Through Open Farm Day 2003

* Agriculture and Forestry [to Oct 2003]
The Prince Edward Island Agriculture Awareness Committee is proud to announce the second annual Open Farm Day on October 5, 2003, presented by Sobeys. The purpose of this initiative is to provide the non-farming general public with the opportunity to visit Prince Edward Island farms and forestry operations to gain a better understanding of the agriculture and forestry community or industry.

Farms and other agricultural operations from around the Island will be participating and representing various Prince Edward Island commodities. Organizers are still in the process of planning, in anticipation of another successful event. In addition to educating the public, through tours and other activities, and promoting the Island agriculture industry, Open Farm Day builds a sense of community between agencies, businesses and farmers.

To date, twenty-four farms and forestry operations have been confirmed as willing to participate. These operations include such commodities as beef, dairy, sheep, potatoes, Christmas trees, wood lots and historic facilities. Each site will have a special activity and an educational component included in their schedule for the day.

The day is being organized by the Prince Edward Island Agriculture Awareness Committee and is one of many activities planned for Canadian Agriculture and Food Celebrations in October. This event is aimed at bringing together agriculture organizations and various levels of government to build national awareness and celebrate the excellence of our agriculture and agri-food industry.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Sobeys, PEI Adapt Council and the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture and Forestry are funding partners of Open Farm Day along with many businesses, supporters and friends in relation to Agriculture and Forestry on Prince Edward Island.

Keep your eye out for posters and farm directories telling more information about Open Farm Day and join in the fun and learning opportunities for the whole family on October 5, 2003. View further details on open farm day at www.gov.pe.ca/go/farm_day.
