Advisory Council on the Status of Women Applauds Diane Campbell Appointment to Federal Tax Court

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women applauds the recent appointment of the first woman from PEI as a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. The Hon. Anne McLellan, Attorney General of Canada appointed Diane Campbell, a native of Prince Edward Island, to the post to join twenty other federal tax court judges currently in place.

"Although much work remains to be done in order for women to have equal access to opportunities in the business world as well as to the bounties of this land and its resources, it is encouraging to see that an Island woman will be among Canada's tax court judges," states Patricia Ballem, Chairperson of the Advisory Council.

Ballem points out that "Diane Campbell is a great role model for young women aspiring to a career in law." Campbell had been practising law in Summerside as a sole practitioner since 1991, doing solicitor work in business, commercial, estate and real estate law.

The appointment is appropriate this year in particular, since this is the 100th anniversary of the adoption of Canada's judicial system. As well, the year 2000 marks the unveiling of the "Famous Five" monument in Ottawa. This monument honours five women from Alberta who, through their persistence, were successful in having women declared as "persons" under the law, in 1929.
