Honourable Michael Currie, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, announced today the Advance Notice of implementation of Spring Weight Restrictions.
The Minister of Transportation is advising the Trucking Industry that if the mild weather persists through the weekend the province may have to implement spring weight restrictions early next week, said Mr. Currie.
With Thursday's mild weather creating a major thaw of roadbed, combined with water run off, the roads have become very susceptible to damage forcing the Province to consider implementing spring weight restrictions on all highways across the province.
I would encourage Industry to use caution and plan their work. The Department is starting to receive complaints where trucks are damaging roads and creating deep ruts on non paved roads, making it very difficult for Islanders who live on these roads to travel, said Mr. Currie.
New Brunswick have begun posting road restrictions and I am sure Nova Scotia is in a similar position.
Highway scale enforcement will be stepped up during this period to protect the infrastructure and cooperation of Islanders is requested to minimize roadway damage during this period.
