The developer and operator of the Central Compost Facility has been honoured for best practices used in engineering technology on the project.
At the Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony of the Consulting Engineers of New Brunswick (CENB) last evening, ADI International Inc. along with Island Waste Management Corporation were honoured with the “Benefit to Society Award” for the Central Compost Facility located at Brookfield, Prince Edward Island.
“This award recognizes the progressive approach the province has taken towards waste management. The Central Compost Facility is recognized as a state-of- the-art processing facility for compost. I wish to congratulate ADI and IWMC and their staffs who have worked so hard on the project for the benefit of Islanders,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.
The Benefit to Society Award acknowledges engineering design projects that have a positive effect on communities in which they are located. The technology was designed specifically for the Central Compost Facility to meet the province’s strict environmental regulations, and furthers the realization of the province’s environmental objectives.
Gerry Moore, CEO of Island Waste Management Corporation, owners of the Central Compost Facility, was on hand to accept the award along with representatives from the design build firm of ADI International Inc.
“It is gratifying to receive this award and acknowledge the innovation and perseverance that has created the most advanced and environmentally sensitive composting operation in the country. In fact, this site has very stringent environmental requirements related to odour control and groundwater protection and is one of the largest containerized composting facilities in the world,” said Moore.
The facility was designed, built and is currently operated by ADI International (PEI) Inc. Hollis Cole, P.Eng, CEO of ADI, was also present at the awards ceremony. “We are pleased to lead this project, which is a significant step toward achieving the environmental management objectives of the Province of Prince Edward Island. It is our hope that other communities around the world will benefit from the technology now in place at Brookfield,” said Cole.
