Royal watchers at Province House interested in following the 2011 Royal Tour of Prince Edward Island will be able to do so without leaving the city, says Premier Robert Ghiz.
“The tour of Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is an Island-wide celebration and we want Islanders to be able to take part in events across our province,” said the Premier. “Plans have been put in place to ensure that anyone who wants to be a part of the events can be.”
The official welcome to Prince Edward Island will take place at Province House the morning of July 4. Large crowds are expected to line the streets surrounding Province House and Great George Street. As such, road closures have been put in place to accommodate the large crowds.
The Province will be setting up large video screens in the area to make sure spectators will be able to see what is happening. The screens will be positioned along Great George Street at Sydney Street and King Street. Another large video screen will be positioned at Confederation Landing Park.
Throughout the day, these screens will simulcast the live television coverage of royal tour events at Dalvay and Summerside. The public is invited to stay around to watch the coverage.
Designated areas will be made available at Province House and Confederation Landing for persons with disabilities to view Their Royal Highnesses. Space in these locations is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Those with disabilities who may wish to have access to these areas are encouraged to arrive early as street closures will be in effect beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 4 and there will be absolutely no vehicle access for drop off at the designated disability viewing areas after 7 a.m.
Wheelchair accessible buses will be available for transport to and from Dalvay-by-the-Sea National Historic Site from the designated drop-off locations and a seating area for over 50 has been set up at the site. There will also be seating arranged at the Summerside airport for Their Royal Highnesses departure from Prince Edward Island.
“The Royal Tour showcases the communities, culture, heritage and history of our province,” said Premier Ghiz. “I hope all Islanders enjoy the day and take part in the celebration.”
