The Acadiana Cup will hold its eighth international golf tournament on Prince Edward Island July 31 to August 4, 2006. More than 150 golfers and companions from France, Belgium, Louisiana, New Brunswick and the local Prince Edward Island Acadian region are expected to attend this year’s event.
A friendly competition between golf enthusiasts from Lafayette, Louisiana and Poitiers, France started in May of 1997. The city of Lafayette, Louisiana invited several golf enthusiasts to meet with a similar delegation in Poitiers, France and as a result, in the spirit of friendly competition, the Acadiana Cup was born.
“We are very pleased to see the tournament come to Prince Edward Island for 2006,” noted Honourable Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism. “The group has a strong working relationship built on the friendships established through their ongoing golf events around the world and we are honoured that they have chosen our Island as part of their tournament tour. The event provides an excellent opportunity to promote our Prince Edward Island golf product to the French golf market.”
The first competition was held in Lafayette in September of 1998 and, from this first competition, lasting friendships were established and continue today. Since 1998 host locations have included Poitiers, France; Lafayette, Louisiana; Namur, Belgium; Moncton, New Brunswick and in 2005, Nimes, France.
“Along with the other participants in the event, the Louisiana team is very happy to be coming to Prince Edward Island for the 2006 golf tournament,” noted Philippe Gustin, Centre International de Lafayette, initial organizer of the event. “Besides its beautiful scenery and wonderful golf courses, the ties which bind Acadians of the north and south guarantee much enjoyment and enriching exchanges.”
