811 Telehealth Service continuing in Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island has signed a new contract with McKesson Canada allowing Islanders to continue to access high quality health care information through the 811 telehealth service, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.

“Approximately 50 Islanders access the 811 telehealth service each day,” said Minister Currie. “Islanders are confident in the advice they are receiving to make informed decisions regarding their health.”

The 811 service connects Islanders with an experienced registered nurse who will provide advice and information, helping callers to navigate the health care system and direct them to the appropriate type of care. The service is offered 24 hours, seven days a week and is available in over 120 languages.

Since the service began in September 2013 there have been over 15,000 calls. The service costs government approximately $28 per call. There is no cost to the caller.

“Advice may include a recommendation to see a health care provider, to go to an emergency room or self care options,” said Executive Director of Community Health at Health PEI, Deborah Bradley. “This can help alleviate pressures on physicians as well as the emergency room.”

Prince Edward Island is partnering with Nova Scotia to continue to offer the 811 service. PEI will pay $2.4 million to continue the contract from December 2014 to March 2019.

Telehealth does not replace 911, which is always the first number that should be called in an emergency.
