Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea today announced the recipients of the 4th Annual Department of Transportation and Public Works Environmental Achievement Awards.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works’ Environmental Achievement Awards are presented annually to both an employee and a contractor who demonstrate best practices with respect to environmental measures as part of their construction activities.
“As a department, we’re pleased to recognize the ever increasing environmental awareness shown by contractors and government alike in the construction process,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea in announcing the award winners.
The winner of this year’s award for contractors was Thompson’s Backhoeing & Trucking of Grand River and New Annan. Thompson’s Backhoeing & Trucking were nominated for their ongoing work as a contractor to the department for shore protection and fisher access construction, installing in-stream culverts and bridges, and constructing drainage swales and systems.
The winners of this year’s award for Transportation and Public Works employees was Francis Kelly from the Department’s Highway Maintenance Division. Kelly, a district supervisor in Queens County, was nominated for his consistent incorporation of environmental protection in his daily work activities approach, including his developing and implementing a plan to reduce sediment loading in the Campbell’s Pond watershed area. “Through the dedicated work of contractors and employees like these, each and every day, we are doing our part to help make the road and bridge construction and maintenance activities on Prince Edward Island a little greener. I congratulate the winners of this year’s awards for their achievements,” said Shea.
