The Prince Edward Island 4-H Council wants to do it's part to help fellow 4-H members suffering under the recent weather crisis in Ontario and Quebec. Through an effort called "Ice Storm Relief Fund," the Council has spearheaded a provincial campaign to raise money for 4-H families in Eastern Ontario and Quebec.
"We want to show our support and offer assistance in whatever way we can. In discussion with our National 4-H Office, it was decided that financial assistance was the most effective method to help farm families cope with the tremendous problems resulting from the January ice storm," says Brian Dingwell, President of the Prince Edward Island 4-H Council. "We complain about a frosty day on the farm, but we have no idea of the stress and despair experienced by these farm families trying to operate in extreme conditions. Our financial support may bring some comfort."
Whatever money is collected by the end of January, 1998, will be forwarded to the National 4-H Office in Ottawa which in turn will direct it to 4-H organizers in both Ontario and Quebec. They are welcoming the support and will place the money with eastern Ontario 4-H families, Quebec Young Farmer families and Quebec 4-H families.
4-H Clubs across the province have been contacted and are responding with donations of all sizes. Farm families from across the Island have been arriving at the Provincial 4-H Office with cheques to go toward the cause.
Anyone wishing to have more information or to contribute to the 4-H Ice Storm Relief Fund can contact the Provincial 4-H Office at the Farm Centre, University Avenue, C1A 7N8.
