2014 Intergeneration Week Contest Winners Announced

* Community Services and Seniors [to May 2015]
The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Intergeneration Contest.

Intergeneration Week is an internationally celebrated event that focuses on bringing generations of people together. The week encourages individuals, families and communities to strengthen their bond through communication and sharing.

To recognize the week, the Seniors’ Secretariat launched a contest for Islanders to submit stories and poems about respect that featured characters from two or more generations. The Secretariat received entries from people of all ages.

“I want to congratulate and thank everyone for participating in the 2014 Intergeneration Week contest,” said Valerie E. Docherty, Minister of Community Services and Seniors. “This week provides an opportunity to increase awareness and appreciation for the knowledge, skills and talents of people from different generations. By learning more about the perspectives of people from other generations, we can build more respectful communities.”

A panel of members from the Seniors’ Secretariat reviewed all contest entries and made their selections.

“It was a pleasure to receive entries this year from across PEI, including residents of community care homes,” said the chair of the Seniors’ Secretariat, Mary Hughes. “The Seniors’ Secretariat believes that people of all ages can develop greater respect and appreciation for the contributions of community members of all ages when we share our stories.”

The prizes are being awarded at local celebrations in Murray Harbour, Summerside and Charlottetown during Intergeneration Week which runs from September 14 to 20.

First prize story: Stewart Arkwell of Summerside, for his story “Respect? I Get It!!”

Second prize: Réjeanne Bourque of Charlottetown for her story, “Little Sam’s Respect for Seniors”
