2012 Winter Woodlot Tour planned for January 28

Islanders interested in learning more about Island forests, watersheds and winter wildlife can do so by attending the annual family-friendly winter woodlot tour, says Agriculture and Forestry Minister George Webster.

“The annual winter woodlot tour has become an event to not only learn more about our forests, watersheds and wildlife, but also an opportunity for families to take part in the interesting and fun outdoor activities that are planned,” said Minister Webster. “The event is free and everyone is welcome.”

The department is partnering with the Prince Edward Island Model Forest Network, the Hunter-Clyde Watershed Group and the Wheatley River Improvement Group to host the tour on Saturday, January 28, with a storm date of February 4, 2012.

The woodlot tour will be held on a private property, 148 Hazel Grove Road (Rte. # 228) located just off Route 2, west of Hunter River. Organizers are focusing on how sustainable management can create healthy forests along streams and water courses, emphasizing the economic opportunities that exist for woodlot owners, as well as hardwood thinning and the Forest Enhancement Program.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s demonstrations will include a 4-H woodsman competition, how to identify and harvest non-timber forest products, chainsaw safety and maintenance, and snowshoeing. Wildlife specialists will be available to discuss animal life on small woodlots as well as identifying the many types of raptors in Island woodlots.

Even though maple tapping season is a few months away, organizers are planning a maple tree tapping session. Emphasis will be placed on identifying quality trees and tap line and bucket layout for people interested in learning about maple syrup production.

There will also be opportunities to enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride and have a cup of hot apple cider.
