1999 Tourism Marketing Campaign To Be Launched

* Fisheries and Tourism [to May 2000]
The Honourable Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Tourism, together with Dale Larkin, Co-Chair of the Tourism Marketing Authority, announced today that the 1999 tourism marketing campaign for Prince Edward Island is about to take off. On February 16, the Confederation Centre will again host the tourism industry marketing presentation that spurs the momentum of the upcoming season. The 1999 publications are printed and as potential consumers around the world are about to receive their updated fulfilment kits, Island tourism operators will get the first preview.

"Through our continued cooperation with the Tourism Marketing Authority, Prince Edward Island maintains a big impact for a small province through our collaborative marketing efforts," noted Minister MacAdam. "The 1999 marketing plan will build on past successes and focus our direction for the future. Industry plays a significant role in the development of the marketing plan and it's important that it be presented to all."

This year's marketing plan incorporates many new elements such as advertising for tourism operators which has been added to the Visitors Guide Website and an attractive new coupon book that offers excellent opportunities to save money. In addition, a newly formatted Island Value Vacations offers a much wider distribution.

The increase in the Quebec market has been addressed this year with the addition of a French map and focused campaign strategy. "We enjoyed a substantial increase in traffic from Quebec and a new campaign will ensure a continuation of that trend," noted Frank Butler, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Tourism and Co-Chair of TMA. "Our primary markets of Ontario and Atlantic Canada remain at the forefront of our focus, while our presence in New England will be intensified. The 1999 strategy is concise, impressive and structured."

The evening provides the industry with an opportunity to meet and discuss issues with government officials, Tourism staff, and representatives from the Internet Guide to PEI, Vacancy System, Golf PEI, TIAPEI, Young & Rubicam, and Quality Tourism Services. The trade show portion gets underway at 6 pm with the presentation at 7 pm built around the theme "Our Enchanted Island Playground." Following the presentation, everyone is invited back to the trade show foyer for an Island Tasting Tour featuring food from various PEI producers.

"Everyone involved in the tourism business is encouraged to join us at the Confederation Centre on the 16th of February," noted Mr. Larkin. "It is a great chance to interact as a team in the tourism industry. I am confident that everyone will enjoy the presentation."
