15 Island Students Head to Sudbury, Ontario, for National Heritage Fair

Fifteen Island students from schools across the province will leave on Monday, July 7, to represent Prince Edward Island at the National Heritage Fair in Sudbury, Ontario.

Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Elmer MacFayden expressed his pleasure with the high quality of student work which will be showcased in Sudbury. "Prince Edward Island will be well represented at the national fair by enthusiastic and creative young Islanders who have a real sense of the history of this province and of Canada," said Minister MacFayden. "I would like to wish the Island delegation well, as ambassadors of Prince Edward Island proudly sharing our heritage."

The National Heritage Fair is an annual event which brings together students from across Canada to share their experience and culture. The fair is the culmination of a series of fairs at the school and provincial levels in all provinces.

Following judging at the Provincial Heritage Fair and upon recommendation of school principals and the agreement of parents/guardians, the following 15 students have been selected to attend the National Heritage Fair during their summer vacation:

Liane Beaulac, Birchwood Intermediate; Ross MacLean, Birchwood Intermediate; Jamie MacIntyre, Spring Park School; Shayne DeHann, Eliot River Elementary; Jonathan Linkletter, Greenfield Elementary; Jeanette Verleun, Montague Intermediate; Morissa Ings, Stonepark Intermediate; Ashley MacDougall, Miscouche Elementary; Christy Cameron, Miscouche Elementary; Cody MacCormack, Rollo Bay Consolidated; Alicia Bruce, Eastern Kings Consolidated; Matthew McNally, Morell Regional High; Timothy Koughan, Donagh Regional; Jonathan Dingwell, Morell Consolidated; Samantha Bruce, Eastern Kings Consolidated.

Rory MacDonald, Belfast Consolidated, will also be part of the Prince-Edward Island delegation as an alumni student.

The Island students will travel with Head of Delegation CĂ©cile Arsenault, and the following chaperones: Darwin Woods, (Eliot River), Dave MacCormac, (Vernon River) and Donna Gallant, (Mermaid).

The Provincial Heritage Fair Committee is already working with students and teachers in preparation for the Heritage Fair in 2004.
