The 14th Annual Gemini Awards will recognize the talents and expertise of the Prince Edward Island film industry, with 10 nominations received for film productions either produced in Prince Edward Island or involving Island talent.
The award-winning Emily of New Moon™ series, a co-production of CINAR and Salter Street Films Ltd., has been recognized again this year, receiving eight Gemini nominations for season II. Emily of New Moon™ is tied for the highest number of nominations received for a dramatic series this year.
Award categories that the series has been nominated for include: Best Direction in a Dramatic Series; Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role; Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic role; Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role Dramatic Series; Best Photography in a Dramatic Program or Series; Best Production Design or Art Direction in a Dramatic Program or Series; Best Costume Design; and, Best Original Music Score for a Dramatic Series.
A key member of PEI's Blooming Point Productions, producer / writer Cheryl Wagner is hoping to bring home anther Gemini to add to the one she received for The Big Comfy Couch in 1995. This year, two shows she produced with Toronto's Radical Sheep Productions for YTV - Panda Bear Daycare and Ruffus the Dog - have been nominated in the same category: Best Preschool Program or Series.
The Award ceremonies are taking place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from November 5-7, and provide an opportunity for film industry professionals to receive recognition for their talent and hard work in creating quality Canadian productions.
The Gemini Awards are awarded for all aspects of English-speaking television in Canada. The Opening Night and Industry Galas will be held on November 5th and 6th respectively. The Closing Gala will be telecast live on CBC Television at 8:00 pm (EST) on Sunday, November 7.
