Islanders seeking medical treatment will have better access to care thanks to the recent successful hiring of seven new physicians, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.
“The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to improving access to timely healthcare across the Island,” said the minister. “Each of these individuals brings a tremendous skill set to provide quality care to Islanders, and we are very pleased these physicians have made the decision to practice in PEI.”
• Dr. Tyler McDonell began his practice this month as a hospitalist, as well as in family medicine, in Summerside. Dr. McDonell is a physician from the P.E.I. Family Medicine Residency Training Program.
• Dr. Thomas Ofuafor will begin his psychiatry practice in Charlottetown later this summer.
• Dr. Sang Lee will begin practice as an anesthetist in Charlottetown in July.
• Dr. Rebecca Schaefer will begin working as an emergency room physician at Prince County Hospital in September.
• Dr. John Morash, who is providing locum support in Tyne Valley this fall, will practice family medicine in Summerside in January 2015.

Since 2007 the province has recruited and retained 79 new physicians to PEI.
“Prince Edward Island understands the importance of attracting highly skilled health care professionals and offers competitive salaries and incentives for our professionals,” said the minister. “I want to welcome all our new physicians to the medical staff of the province and wish them the best in their medical careers here in Prince Edward Island.”
