Invitation to Attend a Lecture/Performance at Province House, Charlottetown

While the “Fathers of Confederation” were meeting in Charlottetown in 1864, life in the countryside was going on much as it had been for decades, and the concerns of rural Islanders were very much focused on the land, and issues to do with the land.

This mind-set of rural Islanders, 150 years ago, will be evoked in a special lecture/performance to be presented in the Legislative Assembly Chamber at Province House, Charlottetown, on Thursday, June 12, beginning at 7 p.m.

Featured will be Dr. Ed MacDonald, of UPEI, in a lecture entitled “Land of One’s Own. Prince Edward Island in the Confederation Era.” The talk will be illustrated with vignettes – words and music – from the theatrical production of Sir Andrew Macphail’s classic memoir The Master’s Wife, scheduled to be performed this summer at the Orwell Corner Village Hall.

A reception will follow the lecture. Admission is free and the public is welcome. However, since space is limited, those planning to attend are strongly advised to call in advance to book seats (telephone Barb O’Donnell at 902-368-5970, or toll free at 1-877-314-5518, or by email at assembly@assembly.pe.ca .
