January 8, 1999 Premier's OfficePremier Pat Binns says he welcomes the court decision regarding the Conflict of Interest allegation against the Honourable Wes MacAleer. "I am very pleased for Wes and his family because they have had to deal with this over the past eight months. It was something that should never have happened," stated Premier Binns "The allegation against Mr. MacAleer was nothing more than a smear effort on the part of the opposition filed under an act they knew to be seriously defective because previous experience and reports recommended improvements that were never made." The Premier says he will immediately move to have Mr. MacAleer assume the additional responsibility of Attorney General, and he will also take immediate action to have a new Conflict of Interest Act developed and presented to the Legislature. As the decision states, "An injustice is created against any person who is the subject of a complaint under the present existing Act."Media Contact: Maurice Rodgerson
