The PEI Liquor Control Commission has started to “Fight Back” for a second year as part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual daffodil pin campaign. During the entire month of April, daffodil pins will be available for purchase in all 18 PEI Liquor corporate retail outlets across the province.
The Canadian Cancer Society’s bright yellow lapel pin is a powerful symbol of strength and courage and provides an opportunity to show support for those living with the disease.
“Unfortunately, the fight against cancer continues for many Islanders,” noted Hon. Robert Henderson, minister responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission. “The Commission is proud to partner with the Canadian Cancer Society to support those impacted by the disease in our province.”
Daffodil pins are available for a $2 donation and tax receipts will be issued to those making donations of $10 or more.
“A cancer diagnosis affects more than one individual. It’s a disease that has an impact on the entire family and others close to the person, says Lori Barker, executive director of the Canadian Cancer Society, P.E.I. Division. “Wearing a daffodil pin throughout the month of April shows many Islanders that you care about what they are going through and you want to fight back against cancer.”
Approximately 880 Islanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year. P.E.I. has among the highest incidence rate of cancer among men in Canada, 12% higher than the national average, and the mortality rate among women with cancer is 10% higher than the national average.
Every donation made during the Canadian Cancer Society’s April Daffodil Campaign will bring us one step closer to preventing cancer, detecting it earlier, improving treatments and helping Canadians live longer, healthier lives.
