“We can all help prevent and respond to abuse in our communities,” said Premier Robert Ghiz, as he declared February 9 - 15, 2014 Family Violence Prevention Week in Prince Edward Island.
“I want to commend the many Island communities and organizations that have planned special activities to help raise awareness about preventing and responding to family violence,” said Premier Ghiz. “As neighbours, friends, family members or co-workers, we must do all we can to prevent and respond to abuse in our province.”
Throughout Prince Edward Island, communities are marking Family Violence Prevention Week by sponsoring walks, awareness sessions, fundraising events, movie nights and other activities.
Beginning Sunday, February 9, Province House will be lit up in purple to raise awareness about family violence prevention initiatives. The 5th Annual Walk in Silence for Victims of Family Violence will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday, February 12 at Province House. The walk is open to everyone, and will end at City Hall with a reception sponsored by the Mayor’s Purple Ribbon Task Force with support from the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.
“I encourage Islanders to take time this week to learn more about family violence, to participate in an event, to wear purple and to take a stand,” said Community Services and Seniors Minister Valerie E. Docherty, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
