Dr. Donna Murnaghan’s commitment to the health of Islanders and her work to improve health services across Prince Edward Island will be missed as she begins a new challenge as Dean of Nursing and professor at Thompson River University in Kamloops, British Columbia, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.
“Although Donna’s expertise and dedication will certainly be missed, I wish her all the best in her future role,” said the minister. “That she has been offered such an important position speaks highly of Donna’s knowledge and the work she accomplished here, where she played an important role in strengthening our healthcare system so that Islanders receive better access to the care they need.”
A founding faculty member at the University of Prince Edward Island’s School of Nursing, her teaching expertise includes Advanced Nursing Practice, Leadership, Communication Theory, Chronic Illness, Primary Health Care, Cancer Research and Quality Improvement.
“It has been my pleasure to serve on the Health PEI board and to help create a more integrated, sustainable health care system for all Islanders,” said Murnaghan. “Although I regret having to leave my position as chair at the end of September, I’m also excited about my new role in British Columbia. I know the Health PEI board will continue to lead system-wide improvements as it carries out its strategic goals and priorities.”
Current vice-chair, Gordon MacKay will serve as interim chair of the board (beginning October 1) until a new chair is appointed after the Health PEI AGM in November. The Health PEI Board nominations committee has already begun the process to find a new chair.
“On behalf of Health PEI, I would like to extend sincere thanks to Donna for her contributions and dedication to the Health PEI board and her commitment to overseeing the delivery of health care services in Prince Edward Island,” said Health PEI CEO, Dr. Richard Wedge. “I wish her all the best as she takes on an exciting new career opportunity this fall.”
