Many Grade 9 students had excellent opportunities to learn about their parents’ jobs and workplaces on Take Our Kids to Work Day, says Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan.
“I commend the many workplaces and schools that take part in Take Our Kids to Work Day,” said Minister Sheridan. “This is an excellent program that offers students who are beginning to think about careers, a first-hand opportunity to see the connection between learning and earning. It is also a great family experience that allows children to better understand what their parents do at work and how they contribute to their workplace.”
Provincial public service employees were invited to bring their Grade 9 children to work on November 7 as part of Take Our Kids to Work Day.
In the morning, the students shadowed their parents as they went about their daily work duties. For the students, the afternoon began with a tour of the Premier’s Office by Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan. They visited Province House where Clerk Assistant of the Legislature Marian Johnston took them on a tour of the historical building, explained the role of the Speaker and how government functions. To wrap up the day, the students learned about eagles and wildlife in Prince Edward Island with Agriculture and Forestry Fish and Wildlife manager Gerald MacDougall.
“The program gives students the opportunity to explore career possibilities, learn about government and the contributions their parents make to our province on a day-to-day basis,” said Minister Sheridan. “The day is always a hit with government, employees and their families.”
Take Our Kids to Work Day is a national program coordinated by The Learning Partnership. Each year, 200,000 Grade 9 students and over 75,000 Canadian businesses and organizations participate in the learning event.
