The Consulate General of Egypt to Canada, M. Amin Meleika, made an official visit to Prince Edward Island on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. He was accompanied by his Cultural Attaché, Dr. Elsayed Mahfouz.
They met with Premier Robert Ghiz on Wednesday morning. They also made courtesy calls to Government House and Charlottetown City Hall. While in the province, they also met with Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, President of the University of Prince Edward Island; Dr. Brian MacMillan, President of Holland College; Keith Lambe, President of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce; and Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.
On Thursday afternoon, they visited Prince County and toured Ellerslie Peat.
It was the Consulate General’s first visit to Prince Edward Island. Although it was mainly a fact-finding mission, there were discussions about trade opportunities, cultural exchanges and shared opportunities in the field of post-secondary education.
Canada enjoys positive relations with Egypt, the most populous Arab country in the world. It continues to serve as a bridge between the west and other Arab countries, with its size and position establishing the country’s central role in the region.
