Hold lifted on season flu vaccine

Health and Wellness
Seasonal influenza vaccination will resume as normal in Prince Edward Island, says Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Heather Morrison.

The temporary hold on the administration of Agriflu and Fluad by Health Canada has been lifted after their review of the safety information for these two vaccines. The detailed Information Notice from Health Canada can be found online at www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/advisories-avis/_2012/2012_164-eng.php

“We are pleased to be able to resume immunization for influenza,” said Dr. Morrison. “Influenza vaccine is an effective way for people to stay healthy during flu season, and we encourage people to be vaccinated.”

Shipments of these two vaccines have resumed to Prince Edward Island and influenza vaccination will resume immediately.

People who have already received a Novartis influenza vaccine do not need to be revaccinated.

Islanders aged 65 and over, pregnant women and children aged 6-59 months, can call to make an appointment at one of the Health PEI public health nursing offices across the province. All others are encouraged to get the flu shot at the nearest provincial health centre or their physician’s office.

Additional information about influenza vaccination is available at www.gov.pe.ca/flu.
