Atlantic Beef Products seeing improved results

Positive steps are being taken to increase profits at the Atlantic Beef Products plant, says Minister of Agriculture and Forestry George Webster.

“I met with the board of directors recently and was very pleased to hear of the positive indicators that are showing improved results at the beef plant,” said Minister Webster. “I commend the plant workers and management for their hard work and commitment to improving the sustainability of the operation.”

This is important news for cattle producers as they are making decisions about the number of calves they will buy and raise in the coming year, he said. A consistent supply of product is critical to the success of the plant.

The Atlantic Beef Products plant recently hired a management team with expertise in specialized beef processing and marketing for beef plants. The management team is working closely with staff assessing all aspects of the plant’s operations to increase efficiencies and to ensure the plant is meeting consumer demand for specific products.

“I am excited about the results,” said Mike Nabuurs, President of Atlantic Beef Products Inc. “A major piece of the puzzle has been filled with the experience that we now have working with us at the plant.”

There are more than 400 cattle farmers on Prince Edward Island. The impact of the beef industry to the Island economy is almost $22 million.

“The cattle industry has great value to the Island economy,” said Minister Webster. “Government’s investment in the beef plant is an investment in our cattle producers and our rural communities.”

The Atlantic Beef Plant is the only federally inspected beef processing facility in the Atlantic Provinces and east of Toronto, Ontario.
