The U12 Eliot River Girls Premier soccer team from Cornwall has won national recognition as a BMO Team of the Week and is a finalist for 2012 Team of the Week Champion, says Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie.
“The BMO Team of the Week celebrates youth soccer by encouraging teams across Canada to demonstrate team pride, team spirit, community commitment and passion for the game,” said Minister Currie. “The Eliot River Ramblers earned the honour of being named one of BMO’s Teams of the Week because of their hard work, dedication and commitment both on the field and in their community.”
The team has been working hard to prepare for this season, including practices in January once a week at an indoor facility. They have also taken part in sessions on sports nutrition and its importance in improving skill. The team has also been giving back to the sport by helping to train younger players in their community. Off the field, the U12 Eliot River team has taken the money earned from fundraisers and donated it to a local food bank.
The 2012 Team of the Week Champion will win a $125,000 community field upgrade, a $5,000 donation to a registered charity of their choice as well as an all-expense paid trip for the team to a national soccer game.
“Being named 2012 Champion is a wonderful opportunity not only for the team but the soccer community in Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage all Islanders to take the time to vote for the U12 Eliot River Girls Premier soccer team over the next two weeks.”
Voting runs August 13 to 27 with a maximum of one vote per day from a given email address. To vote for the U12 Eliot River soccer team, visit www.bmosoccer.com.
