The hot, windy conditions that created an open fire ban have been alleviated by last night’s rain. The current forest fire danger rating is moderate in the Central/Southeastern region of the province and low in the Northeastern and Western regions. Effective immediately, under Section 37.1 of the Fire Prevention Act, the open burning ban on campfires is removed across Prince Edward Island.
“The public was very helpful in alerting volunteer firefighters and government staff to a variety of open fires,” said Minister of Agriculture and Forestry George Webster. “With the public’s help we were able to prevent a number of serious fires.”
Minister Webster said caution is still required for any open fires.
“Individuals wishing to conduct open controlled burns require the necessary burning permits. These permits are valid only when the fire weather index, wind speed, fire department notification and other conditions specified in the permit are met. The legislation does allow for small campfires for cooking and necessary warmth without permits in Prince Edward Island.”
