Special ban on open fires and other sources of ignition, such as Chinese or Flying Lanterns

With the special ban on open fires across the Province of Prince Edward Island, the Provincial Fire Marshal is prohibiting the use of “Chinese or Flying Lanterns.” These devices use an open flame to elevate a lantern into the atmosphere. The lanterns follow wind currents and there is no control on where they might descend and land. They could land and start a fire on adjacent properties or in forested areas. With the current dry conditions Prince Edward Island is experiencing, the use of such devices is highly hazardous.

The Fire Marshal is issuing this ban under sections 6.1 (b), 6.2(b), and 6.3 of the Fire Prevention Act and sections 1.1.1(8), 10.11.4, and 10.11.6 of NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code.

Failure to comply could result in fines ranging from $500 to $2,000, in addition to the costs of extinguishing any fires.
