The expansion currently underway at three grain elevators will benefit the entire Prince Edward Island agriculture industry, says Premier Robert Ghiz.
“The investments we have made in partnership with the PEI Grain Elevators Corporation will support the expansion in grain and oilseeds production and boost export sales,” said Premier Ghiz. “As a government, we will continue to make strategic investments which strengthen the growth and development of the private sector throughout rural Prince Edward Island.”
The provincial cabinet toured the Grain Elevators Corporation’s facilities in Kensington following a cabinet meeting held in the town on Tuesday. Additional storage facilities are being constructed in Kensington, Elmsdale and Roseneath at a total cost of $1.8 million. The provincial government contributed $500,000 to the project through the Island Community Fund.
While in Kensington, Premier Ghiz announced two additional projects which are receiving support under the Island Community Fund. The Town of Kensington will receive $20,000 for the construction of a new accessible recreational playground for the Queen Elizabeth Elementary school and surrounding communities. The town is contributing $20,000 and the balance of $42,500 is coming from the Queen Elizabeth Elementary School Committee.
The Kensington Veterans Memorial Military Museum is receiving $15,750 toward the total cost of a $21,000 project to improve storage conditions for its artifacts.
“Rural communities across Prince Edward Island are benefiting as a result of these investments,” said Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley. “I want to congratulate the sponsors of these projects and wish them every success in carrying them out.”
The Island Community Fund supports projects that promote the strategic interests of the province, initiatives identified in the Rural Action Plan and community projects across Prince Edward Island.
