Construction Underway At Montague Intermediate School

* Education [to Apr 2008]
A new addition to Montague Intermediate School will create a better learning environment for Montague students, said Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, on behalf of Minister of Education, Chester Gillan. Premier Pat Binns, Minister Currie, and Montague students and teachers took part in the official sod-turning ceremony today.

"Construction at Montague Intermediate School is one example of where our government demonstrates a strong commitment to Island students and communities," said Premier Binns.

"This construction project speaks loud and clear that we are listening to the concerns of students, teachers and parents," said Minister Currie. "As a result, we will soon be opening more doors for learning in Montague."

The Montague Intermediate expansion includes the construction of a 22,000 square foot addition, provision of mechanical ventilation in the existing school, as well as other minor renovations. The addition will be located at the north end of the existing

school and will extend into the paved area located between the intermediate and high schools.

The expansion will provide Montague Intermediate School with a gymnasium, industrial technology center, home economics room, computer and science laboratories, resource (library) center, multi-purpose room and a new administration area.

The front entrance of the addition will be barrier-free and an elevator will provide access to the second floor of the new addition. Ramps will also connect the first and second floors of the addition with the existing school.

The project was designed by W.D. Lawrence Architecture and incorporates a brick exterior that will blend in with the existing school. The general contractor is MacLean Construction. Construction is expected to be completed during the late spring of 1999.

The expansion at Montague Intermediate School falls under the Capital Construction Plan for schools, announced last spring by the Department of Education. The Capital Construction Plan will see over $35,000,000 being directed into various school repairs and additions throughout the province. The plan is a multi-year deal that will not only enhance the infrastructure of 10 Island schools, but also provide for the on-going capital maintenance of all schools in PEI.
