Program that delivers books to community care facility residents expands

A program that delivers library materials to seniors living in community care facilities across the province is expanding to include more Islanders, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.

“Delivering books to community care facilities ensures seniors can continue to experience the joy of reading,” said the minister. “This program is another example of the important role the Prince Edward Island Public Library Service plays in promoting literacy.”

Launched as a pilot project in 2009 in four community care facilities, the Community Care Facility Delivery Service provides large-print books, DVDs and audiobooks to residents across Prince Edward Island.

An additional five facilities were recently added to the program, bringing the total number of residences participating to 21. The program delivers books to each facility every six weeks. Library employees work with community care facility staff to select books to meet the reading interests of residents. The books are distributed and enjoyed by clients at each home during the month.

The following facilities recently signed on to the program:

• Dr. John. M. Gillis Memorial Lodge, Belfast

• Rosewood Residence, Hunter River

• Rev. W.J. Phillips Residence, Alberton

• Valley Lodge, Tyne Valley

• Carroll’s Lodge, Georgetown

The Public Library Service’s large print collection holds more than 2,000 books, with additional titles added monthly.

Community Care Facilities interested in participating in the program are encouraged to contact the Public Library Service at (902) 961-7320.
