A new plain language instruction permit preparation kit will help Islanders learn the rules of the road by offering a new, easy-to-understand format, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.
“Whether you’re an Islander who’s just starting to drive, who has reading difficulty, or even if you’re a new Islander who is just beginning to learn the language, this new drivers preparation kit will be very helpful,” said Minister Vessey. “The new kit incorporates the principles of plain language in a flash card format that has been proven to make information easier to understand and retain.”
The new instruction permit preparation kit was developed for the department by The Passing Zone Inc. That company specializes in the development of alternative learning methods, and in creating materials for people with reading challenges.
In the new preparation kit, the rules of the road are printed in plain language on individual flash cards which can help improve recall and comprehension. It is intended for use by individuals who are preparing to test for their instruction permit. When used in conjunction with the free online version of the drivers handbook, the new preparation kit offers a comprehensive overview of the rules of the road.
“By offering a plain language preparation kit, the province is putting Islanders with reading challenges on a level playing field when it comes to understanding the rules of the road,” said Nils Ling, Executive Director of the Learning Disabilities Association of Prince Edward Island. “I applaud the province for its efforts to be more inclusive and for providing this important service to Islanders.”
A French version of the Kit is under development and will be offered as soon as it becomes available.
The new plain language instruction permit preparation kit can be purchased at Access PEI locations across the province at a cost of $20. Proceeds will be donated to the Learning Disabilities Association of Prince Edward Island to support literacy programs.
