2012 Festival of Wines taking place this weekend

The 2012 Festival of Wines is taking place this weekend, Friday May 25 and Saturday May 26, at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Festival visitors will have the opportunity to sample from over 200 limited quantity wines from around the world, including those from Argentina, this year’s feature country.

Winners from the 2nd Annual Prince Edward Island Festival of Wines Competition will also be featured at the festival. This juried event was conducted as a blind tasting and judged by five accredited sommeliers from across Atlantic Canada. Award winning wines were selected in each of the following categories and will be available for tasting and purchase during the festival:

• Sparkling Wines

• Whites under $15

• Whites $15 and over

• Reds under $15

• Reds $15-25

• Reds $25 and above

In addition to wine, culinary samples from the Redwater Rustic Grille and freshly shucked oysters will also be served.

“The 2012 Festival of Wines will also be supporting our local community,” said Robert Henderson, minister responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission. “Local artists will have their work available for viewing and purchase, and I encourage everyone to participate in the silent auction in support of the Hospice Palliative Care Association of Prince Edward Island.”

Tasting sessions take place each evening from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets for each session are $40 and are available through the Charlottetown Civic Centre, either in person, by phone 629-6625 or online at www.civiccentre.pe.ca.
