Go!PEI’s latest challenge, “go! for 10,” will demonstrate simple ways for Islanders to adopt healthier lifestyles through physical activity and healthy eating, says Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie.
“Physical activity and proper nutrition are two important components to living a long and healthy life,” said Minister Currie. “The go! for 10 challenge is a fun way for Islanders to commit to taking concerted steps that will improve their overall state of wellness.”
The go! for 10 challenge is a healthy living challenge to get Islanders, their families, friends, coworkers or classmates to enter a team and spend a week focusing on physical activity and healthy eating. It will run from June 4 to 10, 2012.
Each person on a team will receive a list of physical activities and healthy eating challenges to accomplish during the week with a corresponding point value for each activity. Individuals select the activities they want to do and then work towards completing them at their own convenience. The goal is to get at least 10 points by the end of the week.
Some examples of activities include: adding a new fruit or vegetable to a meal, leaving the car at home and walk or bike instead, or having a picnic with healthy food choices at your favourite green space.
The challenge is open to all Islanders free of charge.
Prizes will be randomly drawn throughout the week and, after all teams have submitted their paperwork, a few teams will be randomly drawn to win a healthy living party with food, fun and games.
To register a team, choose a captain and have them register by calling 892-5323 or emailing gopei@recreationpei.ca. The deadline to submit teams is May 30, 2012.
“The Department of Health and Wellness and go!PEI are working together to encourage and support a more active and healthy Island community,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage Islanders of all ages and lifestyles to participate and take the first steps to living a healthier life.”
