New provincial investments for two projects in Souris will strengthen the local community and improve the quality of life for residents, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.
“The provincial government is strongly committed to supporting projects to assist community organizations that provide needed facilities and services to Islanders,” said Minister MacKinley. “Through the Island Community Fund, we are revitalizing communities across the province by upgrading infrastructure and creating new economic and cultural opportunities.”
An addition to the Souris Lighthouse will include new retail space and will attract new visitors to the area. The total cost of the project is $187,000, with funding of $144,000 from the Island Community Fund and Skills PEI. The Souris Harbour Authority Inc. is contributing $43,000 to the project.
New classroom space is being constructed in the lower level of the Harbourview Training Centre. The addition of wider hallways, new washrooms and improvements to lighting, electrical, mechanical and storage areas will make the space more accessible. The total cost of the renovations is $103,000, with the Island Community Fund and Skills PEI contributing $85,000 and the sponsor providing $18,000.
“By supporting these projects, Skills PEI is helping improve local facilities while providing Islanders with valuable job experience,” said Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach. “My department is very happy to help Islanders advance in their work lives while supporting community development.”
Skills PEI manages the delivery of employment and training programs aimed at improving the skills and labour force participation of Islanders.
The Island Community Fund is a six-year, $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs of communities across the province.
