Prince Edward Island Art Collection celebrates Island artists with new pieces

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Six new works by Prince Edward Island artists have been added to the Island Art Collection, which celebrates the Island’s rich creative talent, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.

“Our government is committed to supporting our Island artists. The contributions of artists to our province’s economy and way of life are substantial,” said the minister. “The Prince Edward Island Art Collection is a great way to promote our visual artists while celebrating the history of art in our province.”

The new works include:

• Icarus Falls, a watercolour by Stephen MacInnis,

• In search of…, a falling glass piece by Marcella Rosemberg,

• Infinite Refrain and Under a Bird’s Wing, earthenware and terra sigillata pieces by Sarah Saunders,

• Kyle Jewell, a photograph from the Young Farmers series by Becka Viau; and

• Poppies Grow…, an oil painting by Brenda Whiteway.

An independent jury selected the pieces from 26 works submitted by 11 artists for consideration.

The pieces will be on display in provincial government buildings to which the public has access. These locations include Access PEI sites, boardrooms and public areas. The Prince Edward Island Art Collection program was created in the early 1980s to encourage the development of Island artists and raise awareness of, and interest in, visual arts in the province. There are more than 130 pieces from more than 90 Island artists in the collection. Learn more online at www.gov.pe.ca/tourism/artbank.
