Investments by the provincial government will help Montague’s Garden of the Gulf Museum promote local heritage and will help the Montague Lions Club continue hosting community fundraising events, said Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“Government is very pleased to partner with these organizations to upgrade their facilities and continue the important work they do in the community,” said Minister MacKinley. “This funding is a reflection of our commitment to strengthen life in rural Prince Edward Island by investing in organizations that focus their efforts on community development.”

The Garden of the Gulf Museum, the oldest museum in Prince Edward Island, is renovating its third floor to increase its exhibit space to display more artifacts.

The Island Community Fund is contributing $10,000 to the project, with Skills PEI contributing $59,000. The total cost of the renovations is $71, 800.

“The Garden of the Gulf Museum is an incredibly valuable community resource as well as a historically important building. By involving SkillsPEI work crews in this project, we have been able to help the museum while letting local workers gain valuable on-the-job experience in construction and renovation,” said Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach.

The Montague Lions Club requires new kitchen equipment to continue to provide catering service for community fund-raising events. The total cost of the new equipment is $38,500. Government is contributing $26,000 through the Island Community Fund.

“I would like to thank the members of these organizations for their hard work and their commitment to improving life for all residents in their community,” said Minister MacKinley.

The Island Community Fund is a six-year, $27.5 million program to address infrastructure needs in rural communities. It is part of the provincial government’s rural development strategy.
