Islanders reminded to drive with caution during National Safe Driving Week

Islanders have received only a taste of winter driving so far this season but, all the same, drivers should use extra caution and ensure their vehicles are prepared for the challenges winter can present, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.

“It’s very important that drivers ensure their vehicles are ready for the challenges winter driving can present,” said Minister Vessey. “But the best precaution of all is to adjust driving to suit conditions and slow down when snow and ice appear on the roads.”

National Safe Driving Week is an annual event coordinated by the Canada Safety Council during the first week of December. This year the theme of the week is “Who has your back on the road this winter?”

Some of the precautions recommended by the Canada Safety Council include:

• Adjust driving behaviour. Make sure there is adequate space between you and the vehicle ahead of you and be sure to adjust your speed for poor conditions

• Maintain your vehicle. Be sure to do a full tune up before winter and be sure to install winter tires.

• Equip your vehicle. All vehicles should have an emergency car kit including a shovel, ice scraper, booster cables, flashlight and washer fluid as well as other items like a warm blanket, water, matches and a first aid kit.

“Following these tips can go a long way to improving safety on Island roads,” said Minister Vessey. “Being prepared mentally, and having a vehicle properly equipped for winter, can give drivers an edge against Mother Nature.”
