A workshop on the business of fishing is part of a program designed to attract a new generation of fishers to an important Island industry, says Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.

“Investing in young fishers entering the industry is key to a successful industry,” said the Minister. “It is very important to gain knowledge of the global fishery to assist in the development of new ideas and new ways of promoting our seafood products around the world.”

Speaking at a Future Fishers Program workshop held Thursday in Summerside, Minister MacKinley said the program reflects government’s commitment to strengthening the fishing industry and rural communities across Prince Edward Island.

The Future Fishers Program provides a combination of financial assistance and formal training to help establish young fishers entering the industry. Financial assistance is provided in the form of an interest rebate to those who purchased a Class A lobster license from a retiring fisher.

Since the program began in 2009, 55 young fishers have participated in workshops, courses and meetings offering a variety of education and mentoring opportunities.

“The Future Fishers Program has been very successful attracting young people into the industry,” said the Minister. “As the next generation of fishers, they will become the heart and soul of the fishing industry and our one Island community.”
