Education Governance Commission Encourages Islanders to Attend Public Meetings

Islanders are urged to attend one of the final three Community Conversations so that they can have their say on how the education system should be governed, says the Prince Edward Island Education Governance Commission.

The final three Community Conversations will be held November 21, 23 and 24 at the following schools: École Évangéline, Charlottetown Rural High School and Montague Regional High School. Simultaneous interpretation services will be available at the session held at École Évangéline for French speaking participants. All sessions begin at 7 p.m.

“Overall, we are seeking your views, ideas, and advice with regard to 1) who should do what, and 2) how things should be done in our education system to better facilitate student learning,” said co-chair Bill Whelan

All members of the public are encouraged and welcomed to attend Community Conversations, to discuss governance of the education system in Prince Edward Island. Background information will be provided, after which participants will be invited to engage in facilitated discussions to share views on strengths, issues or concerns, and ideas and advice on how to improve governance of the PEI education system.

“We hope that individuals such as parents, teachers, principals, School/Board/Department staff, trustees, and interested members of the public, or groups or organizations join us at these meetings to share their views on education governance,” said co-chair Carrie St. Jean.

In late October, the Commission released Charting the Way, an Education Governance Discussion Paper. Now the Commission is seeking public input on a governance approach that ensures leadership and accountability for student learning outcomes.

The discussion paper is available for download on the Commission’s website, www.peieducationgovernance.com. The website also provides background information, meeting schedules, and an online feedback form. For social media purposes, the Commission is using hashtag PEIedugov as a channel for public discussion.
