Drivers encouraged to use extra caution as winter approaches

Island drivers should use extra caution over the coming weeks as the weather becomes colder and more roadway hazards present themselves, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.

“There are a number of extra precautions Island drivers can take to be safer over the winter months, including installing certified winter tires, equipping vehicles with emergency car kits and making sure vehicles are in good working order,” said Minister Vessey. “But most importantly, Island drivers should adjust their driving to suit conditions and wear a seatbelt.”

Emergency car kits should include an ice scraper, a shovel, booster cables, a flashlight and washer fluid, as well as other items like a warm blanket, water, matches and a first aid kit. These items can be very helpful if an emergency arises.

Winter tires should show the mountain and snowflake symbol. This symbol ensures the tires are certified for winter use. When snow and ice are present, certified winter tires provide optimal traction and handling and can make a substantial difference when trying to avoid a collision.

“Most collisions are avoidable, as are many of the injuries caused by collisions,” said Minister Vessey. “If drivers follow a few simple steps, like slowing down in bad weather, or wearing a seatbelt, collisions and injuries can be greatly reduced on Island roads.”
