Premier Pays Tribute To Acorn

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns today expressed condolences to the family of the late E. Frank (Duck) Acorn.

"There were a number of aspects of our community and province in which Duck Acorn made a tremendous contribution, but his name has become synonymous with the harness racing industry. He played a key role in the development of the industry, especially at the Charlottetown Driving Park," stated the Premier. "He served in a number of capacities at the CDP ranging from messenger to part owner. He will be best remembered for his leadership role in establishing the Gold Cup and Saucer Race and the Gold Cup Parade. This past Saturday, just days before his death, the Gold Cup and Saucer attracted record crowds, bets, and a new record. What more fitting tribute to Duck's life."

From 1919 until 1981, Mr. Acorn never missed a race at the CDP. He was also active in many other community organizations, especially sports activities, and was a successful city businessman.

"I want to take this opportunity to express my sympathy to his wife Florence, and to their children. They can take pride in the fact Duck's name will live on in the memories of many race fans."
